Plan sensitivity

The sensitivity tool reveals the inputs with the biggest impact on your optimized Plan.

The tool works by changing selected inputs in your Plan one at a time to see how much those changes affect the expected VNM utility of your optimized Plan.

Sensitivity details are automatically displayed whenever you run Plan optimization.

Sensitivity options

You can choose to see sensitivity details for:

  1. results
  2. probabilities
  3. variables

You can choose different +/- percentages to see how sensitive your optimized Plan is to inputs being increased and decreased by those percentages.

If you are using variables with best and worst case values, you can also see how sensitive your optimized Plan is to those variables being changed between their best and worst case values.

Sensitivity details

Sensitivity details are displayed in the form of a horizontal bar chart.

Each horizontal bar represents an input that has been changed by the sensitivity tool, according to your selected sensitivity options.

The horizontal bars are aligned around a central vertical line which represents the base expected VNM utility for you optimized Plan.

As the sensitivity tool changes each input, the horizontal bars will extend out from the central line to show how much those changes impact the expected VNM utility of your optimized Plan.

  • A horizontal bar extending to the right of the central line shows the impact of changing an input by a percentage increase or to a best case value
  • A horizontal bar extending to the left of the central line shows the impact of changing an input by a percentage decrease or to a worst case value

If changing an input also changes the optimal decision for your Plan, a red icon appears next to that input's horizontal bar as follows:

  • A red icon to the right of the horizontal bar indicates that the optimal decision changes when changing the input by a percentage increase or to a best case value
  • A red icon to the left of the horizontal bar indicates that the optimal decision changes when changing the input by a percentage decrease or to a worst case value

How to identify key inputs

There are 2 ways to use sensitivity details to identify key inputs for your Plan:

  1. Inputs that have larger horizontal bars have a larger impact on the expected VNM utility of your optimized Plan
  2. Inputs with red icons are important because they are more likely to cause changes the optimal decision option will have red icons at the end of the horizontal bars.

In both cases, you should consider giving these inputs special attention to ensure they are as accurate as possible.
